‘The Mummy’ Featurette

We can usually rely on Tom Cruise to save our world in the movies. But in The Mummy, he helps to bring about its destruction by discovering one pissed off mummy, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella) to be exact. Once again, the world will call upon Tom Cruise to save us all in Alex Kurtzman‘s film (even if it’s his fault this time), which is the first entry in the potential Universal Monster Universe.

The Mummy is the first entry in the new Universal’s Monster Universe, but the fact that it’s the next summer movie with Tom Cruise has me more interested. Plus, it’s written by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange) and a frequent collaborator of the actor’s, Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher), which raises expectations.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The Mummy opens in theaters June 9.
